well, it's been one of the busiest years of my life.
first off, i was saddened by the deaths of lisa wales and mark craney, two fixtures in my drum orientated universe that i and others will truly miss. our hearts go out to all their friends and families.
starting in jan 05 w/the traces of rhythm festival which included performances w/metropole orch., arnold marinessen & le quan nin. we are now planning some trio concerts and a cd recording for mar. 2007.
feb. - mar. - april - recorded vivian campbell's solo blues cd w/ zz top's billy gibbons. & i auditioned for fantomas and met mike patton at this time.
these 2 gigs started me thinking about a smaller kit for side gigs etc.so i started bulding my sick jazz kits w/ dw.
may- i was in l.a.for the first gig w/the new outTrio at the baked potato w/doug lunn and alex machacek.
home to edit and mix the tosca strings/chris maresh/stephen barber dvd w/engineer guitarist mark younger-smith.
and do sick jazz surgery for magna carta's bozzio prime cuts cd.
then to l.a. for an intense 10 days of rehearsal, and a first gig at the troubador w/fantomas. the next day i left for amsterdam to meet w/ my tech michel and prepare 2 kits for touring europe w/fantomas. one (my big kit) for most of the tour and another smaller one to ship to russia and some other one off places. i store my stuff at pustjens percussion (owned by jan pustjens -principal percussionist w/ concertgebouwe orch.) he was nice enough to invite me to a performance of debussy's images (one of my favorites).
we did a great tour of big euro rock fests and some clubs. i really enjoyed it. all got along on a hard tour. and i was really challenged by the music.
then i went to london to meet my family and go to jeff beck's wedding. it was a wonderful event packed w/stars from music, comedy, films and the world of hot rods.
i went down to tony hymas' for a few days and we recorded 2 days at a studio called yellow shark. we just improvised and will overdub to complete it for a cd.
then a 2 week solo tour of the uk for dw ending up in ireland.
during this period of intense touring
i still managed to compose new pieces esp. for string quintet and piano using reason and sibelius.
then home to finish editing and release the out trio dvd (w/pat o'hearn on bass) a special one off live concert from 03.
back out to l.a to build a kit for my son, do some hanging and shooting w/tool's adam jones /maynard and (my son's favorite drummer) danny carey.
rehearsed for touring w/ chad wackerman and marco miniman.
then over to chicago for the drum pad's anniversary show.
(all artists were videoed for a compilation dvd and individual dvds that are coming soon)
back to l.a. for a gig w/vivian campbell for the release of his cd.
and the recording of several new projects w/warren cuccurullo: 1st a more commercial thing that he's calling "chicanery", and 2nd a new band of very intense experimental music including a track he suddenly remembered that frank zappa used to audition him with in78!
i completed the recording of a drum sample cd for the drumcore program. it will be coming out at the namm show in 2 weeks.
sept. saw the release of the new chamberworks cd done with the metropole orchestra on the nps output lable (distributed by favored nations). we now have it for sale on the merch. page. this album is for me a sort of "masterwork" if i can say that.
nov. i went back to europe w/michael riessler and pierre charlial for the lieberknussen jazz festival.
at this time i met w/members of the amsterdam percussion ensemble and we are planning collaborative tours in europe in may and nov.of this year. more about this soon.
and in dec.back out w/fantomas for concerts in brazil .it was fantastic to go there for the first time and i was lucky to bring back a few cool percussion instruments.
through the holidays i've been busy while resting by preparing music for the out trio shows at namm on jan. 20th and baked potato jan.
21st. i'm trying to get all of my music in an organised written out form so a can arrange it for what ever may come up.
zakir hussein is working on a tour of bombay, india, dubai and singapore feb. 3rd -7th & 18th (respectively) 2006. it's with giovanni hidalgo, selva ganesh and vikku. i'm really excited to meet and play with such masters.
i'd like to thank all of you for your support this year, especially those of you who came out to see me play, bought my cds & dvds and those in the new places i've gone who got to see me play live for the first time (russia, poland, brazil etc.).
