Born to Love You - Luis Gasca

Luis was a fiery, Miles Davis influenced Latin/Jazz trumpeter who played with Malo, Janice Joplin and Dr. John. I played with him around San Francisco with various others in a constantly changing line up that included Pat O'Hearn and Joe Henderson at times.
He got a deal at Fantasy Records in Berkley, with the famous jazz producer/writer Orin Keepnews. He called me in to rehearse the band in the recording studio and to record one track. The band consisted of an all star line up of Jack DeJohnette, George Duke, Eddie Henderson, Joe Henderson, Julian Priester, Victor Pantoja, and Carmello Garcia. Jack played my drums, and on the track I played, he played piano. The track was John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme."
This was my first recording session ever! Talk about being thrown into the deep end with out knowing how to swim!! One run through, one take, that's it! Playing drums with one of my major drum heroes was not easy on the nerves - as well as backing up Joe Henderson! I was only 22 years old!
